You need a truck. Whether you’re buying a new truck to haul a crew and equipment or for recreation one of the things you’ll need to know is how long the truck is. Today we’ll be looking at the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 which comes in different lengths depending on the size of the cab and the length of the bed or “box”. Let’s look at some of the different options you have.
The overall length of a 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 ranges from 229.5” – 241.2”. You have three different cab sizes to choose from: Regular cab, Double cab, and Crew cab. There are also three different bed sizes to choose from: Short bed, Standard bed, and Long bed.
You’ll want to consider this when buying your new truck. Are you hauling a crew or just equipment? If you want a truck for recreation will you be taking friends or family with you or going solo?
With all of these options buying a new truck can be confusing. I’m hoping to clear some of it up for you in and make the search for your new truck an easier one.
Below we’ll go over the length of the different cabs and beds and also the specs of each model. After that, we’ll go over some of the other specs of the different trim packages.

What are the different cab sizes?
The cab size you choose will defiantly affect your level of comfort and the comfort of your passengers. If you are going to spend a lot of time on the road then you should take this choice seriously. Different cab sizes also come with the option to choose your bed size. How many people will be riding with you? Will they have their own equipment to haul along with yours?
First, let’s look at the regular cab option. This option does not come with a back seat so if you need to transport a crew this is not the option for you. You can fit 3 people into the cab but I would imagine that there wouldn’t be much room to move around. The overall length of this model is 229.5 in. The regular cab only comes with the options for a long bed.
The next option is the double cab. The double cab can fit 6 passengers which makes it a better choice for those of us who are transporting a crew. The overall length of this model is 231.7 in and the double cab only comes with the option of a standard bed.
The third cab option you have to choose from is the crew cab. The crew cab can also fit 6 passengers but gives you more room to move around with more head, shoulder, and hip room. The wheelbase of this model is also slightly larger than the double cab. The overall length, which ranges from 231.7in. to 241.21in, depends on if you want a short bed or standard bed.
What are the different bed sizes?
The bed of your truck is most likely where you will be storing your cargo. As you choose your bed size you’ll need to take into consideration the type of cargo you will be hauling. Think about the length, weight, and amount of cargo you will be transporting. Are you going to be hauling building materials and construction equipment? Or are you going to be using your truck for things like hunting and camping? The length of the bed will make a big difference in the kind of things you can haul and what you can use your truck for. Let’s take a look at the available options.
There are a few dimensions to consider when it comes to the bed of the truck. First, we’ll be looking at the short bed.
If you want a truck with a short bed then you will only have the option of a crew cab, which is the largest cab. The floor of short bed measures 69.92 in. long and 71.4 in wide. The wheel housings measure 50.63 in and the height of the cargo box is 22.40 in. The cargo volume of this model is 62.9 ft.
Next is the standard bed which you can get with the crew or double cab. The floor of this bed measures 79.44in. long but the width is the same as the short bed at 71.4in. The wheel housing and cargo box height are also the same but the cargo volume of this model is higher at 71.7ft.
Lastly, you have the long bed which only comes with a regular cab. This bed is a lot longer at 98.18in. but the width, the wheel housings, and the cargo box height are the same as the other two beds. The cargo volume is also larger at 89.1 ft!
Different Specs and Choosing The Best Ones For You.
Now let’s move on to the other specs and options that the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado comes with. We probably won’t cover every single add on or combination because there are a lot of ways to make this truck your own!

Buyers will be happy to know that the 2020 Silverado 1500 is inheriting some of the Silverado HD’s features. The 15 camera views and the transparent trailer feature will now be available on the 1500 model. Smart technology is also coming to the 2020 Silverado. Truck owners will now be able to access the iN-Command Control system by either the truck’s “infotainment” system or their iOS or Android smartphone! Adaptive cruise control will also be an available option that will save you some gas on those long highway drives and also make your driving experience a more relaxing one. Along with this, there will be more exciting tech features coming with the 2020 Silverado. However, I’m sure you have more questions you would like to ask. Let’s move on to some other areas of interest like fuel economy and safety features.
What kind of gas mileage will I get?
You’ll be glad to know that the 2020 Silverado 1500 was rated one of the most fuel-efficient trucks by Kelly Blue Book! The MPG of this truck ranges from 18MPG to 27MPG depending on the kind of engine package you get, whether you choose 4WD or 2WD, and whether you want a Turbo or Diesel engine.
This is a big improvement from last year’s model which ranged from 21-23MPG. There are a lot of pickup trucks sold in America so fuel economy is a big consideration.
It also depends on what is important to you. Horsepower or fuel economy? If you are going to horsepower I would suggest going with the gas engine which offers 420 horsepower to the diesel’s 277. If you are more interested in fuel economy then I would suggest the Duramax diesel inline-six which gets 25MPG to the gas V-8 engine’s 17.
Both engines offer 460 lb-ft of torque but the gas engine needs to rev up to 4,100rpm while the diesel can deliver it at 1,500. The diesel engine also runs smoother than the gas. The Duramax inline-six engine is balanced and the fuel injection system quiets engine clatter. This engine runs at 36,250 psi and has nine-hole injectors that deliver fuel 10 times per combustion cycle.
If you are interested in towing power, however, you will want to check out the V-8 gas engine. The V-8 tops out at 13,400 lbs while the diesel tops out at 9,300.
What about safety features?
The 2020 Chevy Silverado has excellent safety ratings getting mostly “good” and “superior” results from IIHS and 4 to 5 stars from NHTSA.
These ratings covered everything from side impact, front and rear crash ratings, roof strength, rollover and so on. Chevy seems to have gone the extra mile for their buyers by including several safety features in an already safe to drive vehicle. Some of the safety features the 2020 Silverado has are:
- a complete airbag system
- seatbelt pretensioners
- stability control
- a security system
- and an anti-lock braking system
Along with the 15 view camera in the rear of the truck, it also has a front pedestrian view camera. This feature allows the truck to apply brakes in the case of someone walking out in front of you while the vehicle is in motion. It also has lane change alerts to make switching lanes more convenient and comfortable. With this feature, you can change lanes without turning around in your seat to look behind you because it will alerts you if anyone is in your blind spot.
With all of that in mind, if safety is the main feature you are interested in then the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado is the truck for you. The Silverado has remained one of Chevrolet’s top-selling trucks for the last twenty years and with all of the new tech and safety features being offered in 2020 I’m sure it will continue to be! With all of this in mind, I’m ready to go truck shopping!
I hope this information has helped you make some decisions when it comes to buying your new truck. It looks like the 2020 Silverado has a wide variety of options and features no matter what model you buy. As one of the top-rated trucks in fuel economy, safety, and tech features you will defiantly not be disappointed.
